About the CPCS renewal test
This test makes sure that key knowledge of each plant category or group of categories is maintained, in order to renew a CPCS competent operator (blue) card.
The renewal test is split into test modules. Each module has 15 randomly selected multiple choice questions, which need to be answered within 15 minutes.
Each module is CPCS plant specific and the questions are based on a range of topics and key knowledge expected of experienced plant operators.
Different modules have been developed to meet the demands of various construction plant and trades. Modules are available for each category of plant or group of similar categories. You will need to make sure you book and prepare for the right one(s).
You will need to pass each module to retain each category when renewing your card. Concessions may apply to test bookings when similar categories are held on a card, but only one module needs to be passed.
Renewal tests can be easily booked direct with All Plant Training at a cost of £45.00 (£37.50 +vat) for up to five modules, this includes all CITB and administration fees.
Taking the test
The CPCS renewal test is broken down into plant specific modules. There are up to 15 questions per module.
You will have 15 minutes to answer 15 multiple-choice questions per module, once the test starts.
These are computer based tests and all you need to do is click on the relevant answers by touching the screen or using a mouse.
A tutorial is available before the test which explains how everything works and lets you try out the buttons and computer.
To take the test, you need to:
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before your test starts
- Bring your confirmation letter/email with you
- Bring ID that includes your photo and your signature. See a full list of acceptable ID that you can use (linked)
If you don’t have suitable ID you can use an Identification Waiver Form (details on how to complete and use the form are included on the document).
Staff at the test centre will check your documents when you arrive. You will not be able to sit your test if you don’t have the relevant documents, and you will lose your fee.
After the test
A score report for each module will be printed straight after you have completed the test. This will advise if you have passed or failed each module.
The score report will also provide you with feedback on any areas where you might benefit from further learning or revision.
Once you have passed the necessary module(s) of the CPCS renewal test providing you have achieved required hours within your Logbook and your application has been signed by an approved Validator confirming your hours on each machine, you can apply to renew the competent operator card for the categories that you hold.
If you haven’t got Validated log book evidence for your chosen categories, speak to a member of All Plant Training and they can arrange Site Based Assessments or further Practical testing in lieu of log book hours
