Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS Cards)

Level 1 (CSCS Labourer Card – Green Card)

This qualification is designed for individuals who are new to the construction sector and / or who want to gain their CSCS Green Card to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker. The qualification enables the learner to demonstrate an achievement of knowledge and skills in risk assessments, manual handling, working at heights, risks to health, and working around plant and machinery. Successful completion of this qualification will allow the learner to undertake the mandatory knowledge test in order to gain a CSCS Green Card to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker. There are no formal entry requirements for learners. This qualification is available to learners aged 16 years or over. The Labourer card is specifically for people carrying out labouring duties. Level 2 (CSCS Skilled Worker Card – Blue Card)

The Blue Skilled Worker card is for those who have achieved a construction-related NVQ or SVQ level 2. CSCS Skilled Worker cards are essential for most construction workers to get on building sites to perform their duties. These cards prove to employers, managers, and supervisors that the holder has completed the necessary training to perform their role safely on site.

Supervisor (CSCS Supervisors Card – Gold Card)                                                      

This card is for professionals that work in a supervisor role and have been awarded a Construction Related Supervisory SVQ or NVQ level 3 or 4. This card demonstrates that you have the skills, knowledge, experience and capability to supervise personnel in a construction environment.

The CSCS Gold Skilled Worker card is available for those who have:

  • Achieved a Construction Related NVQ/SVQ level 3 or SVQ at SCQF level 6.
  • Completed an approved apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC, Institute of Apprenticeships etc.)
  • Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship that included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

Managers (CSCS Managers Card – Black Card)

The goal of many managerial professionals in the industry is to acquire a CSCS Black card. This is the highest-ranking CSCS card and shows your professional competence as a manager. The Manager’s card is available for managerial & technical occupations where an industry-approved construction-related managerial or technical qualification has been achieved.

This card is available for manager and technical occupations subject to:

Achievement of a relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7
An SVQ at SCQF Level 10 or 11 in Construction Management/Technical related qualification

All applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years, at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. All cards are valid for five years.
